Greenville Homeownership - Forgotten Basics

Posted by Cameron Keegan on Tuesday, October 28th, 2014 at 9:53am.

Buying a home is an exciting time and there’s a lot to learn along the way. A LOT.  I always advise my first time homebuyer clients to prepare themselves as much as possible for their new journey, but it’s impossible to learn everything ahead of time. In no particular order, here are some of the basics that I find are sometimes forgotten:

Property Taxes

Greenville property taxes are due on January 15 without exception. If you’re a day late the penalty is 3% and will continue to increase the longer you put off paying your bill. There is no way to charm your way out of a penalty so keep track of this date!

Schools Assigned to Your New Home

If you’re a parent of a school aged child, the Greenville, SC schools assigned to your new home may play a bigger factor than you think. There’s plenty of reading you can do ahead of time, but sometimes it’s really helpful to speak with a parent about their experiences. If you have the chance to do so, I highly recommend it.  If not and you've got a few questions about different Greenville schools, give us a call at (864) 520-1000 or contact RE/MAX Moves.

There’s no way to dress this up and make it sound fun, but essentially you need it. This topic could be a blog post onto itself! Grab a coffee and sit down to learn more about homeowners insurance, hazard insurance and mortgage life insurance. Understand what’s available to you and really consider your options. Happy reading, and be sure to contact Shannon Harvey, Greenville SC Insurance Agent with Allstate, with any questions!

DIY Disasters

Now that you’re responsible for owning a new property, you’ll have to make repair decisions along the way. Sometimes it’ll be tempting to put off a repair or complete a renovation yourself. There’s a lot of variables at play with this, so I’d recommend that you arm yourself with knowledge. Get quotes, ask people you trust for honest opinions, read. Repeat.

Maybe you’ve done this before, and you’re all trained at maintaining your current home or finding the newest apps to help you manage your new homeowner responsibilities. If so, this post might not be what you need right now but I’d bet money there’s some advice you wish you’d gotten before jumping into the Greenville real estate market.

Tell us now! What’s something you wish someone had told you before you’d bought your first house?
